The Thoracic Surgery Department at Mayo Hospital, Lahore, is a critical unit providing 24/7 emergency and elective care to thousands of patients. Established in 1959 and converted into a teaching unit in 1995, it is the first teaching thoracic surgery department in Punjab, offering specialized procedures such as lung resections, bronchoscopies, trachea repair, and mediastinal surgery. The unit also trains postgraduate residents, ensuring the next generation of thoracic surgeons is well-prepared.

However, the current state of the Chest Ward severely hampers its ability to provide top-quality care:

Ward Conditions:
Inadequate infrastructure, shared spaces for washrooms and kitchens, dysfunctional centralized suction systems, and lack of basic facilities like proper dressing and procedure rooms.

Operation Theater (OT):
Sharing a theater with another department, broken air conditioning, unsterilized equipment, and improper zoning expose patients to increased infection risks. Large holes in the ceiling and inadequate space further exacerbate the problems.

Essential Facilities:
There are no dedicated rooms for female doctors, consultants, or staff nurses, and the patient recovery area lacks appropriate postoperative care facilities.

We aim to transform the Chest Ward into a state-of-the-art facility, equipped with:

  • Renovated patient wards, including an ICU/HDU with modern equipment.
  • A dedicated modular OT with proper zoning, centralized air conditioning, and sterile storage.
  • Separate and functional rooms for doctors, nurses, and consultants.
  • Modern surgical tools like fiber-optic bronchoscopes, mediastinoscopes, and advanced thoracotomy sets.

The Chest Ward admitted 630 inpatients and managed over 3,000 outpatients last year alone. Despite these achievements, its current condition undermines its potential to serve as a center of excellence. Renovating this facility will save countless lives, improve patient outcomes, and provide a better environment for teaching and training future surgeons.

Let’s join hands to transform the Chest Ward at Mayo Hospital into a top facility. Every rupee matters and brings us closer to our goal of providing quality care to those in need.
